C. Chisari (2025), Gender-Sensitive Reparation through Art: Hammering Suffering at Fragmentos
December 22nd, 2025
The article “Gender-Sensitive Reparation through Art: Hammering Suffering at Fragmentos” by Chiara Chisari examines the concept of gender-sensitive reparation within the framework of transitional justice, with particular attention to the potential of art as a form of symbolic reparation for women survivors of conflict.
Drawing on the recognition of the differentiated impact of conflict on women, the article highlights the limitations of traditional reparation models, which are often grounded in formalistic approaches and fail to adequately address the symbolic, relational, and structural dimensions of gender-based violence. Through an analysis of Fragmentos, Espacio de Arte y Memoria—a counter-monument in Bogotá created by women survivors of sexual violence during the Colombian conflict—the article explores the capacity of artistic practices to function as reparative tools that foster recognition, memory, and survivors’ agency. The author focuses in particular on how artistic and memorial practices can contribute to gender-sensitive forms of symbolic reparation, examining the relationship between survivors’ participation, public recognition, and processes of memory-making. The article also considers the broader implications of such practices for an understanding of reparation as a transformative process, rather than one oriented solely toward compensation.
