“What Kind of World Do We Want to Live In”: the Appeal by Ristretti Orizzonti

“What Kind of World Do We Want to Live In” is the title of an appeal written by Ornella Favero, Director of Ristretti Orizzonti and President of the National Conference on Justice-related Volunteering.
It is a response to the circular titled “Custodial Methods for the High Security Circuit”, signed on February 27 by Ernesto Napolillo, Director General of the Department of Penitentiary Administration, and recently made public. The eight-page document calls for even tighter restrictions in the Alta Sicurezza (AS) [High Security] Circuits—AS1, AS2, and AS3—where inmates convicted of mafia-related and terrorism offenses are held.
Through the voice of Director Favero, Ristretti Orizzonti strongly condemns this further “confinement within confinement” for those in High Security, while also reminding readers that over the past 12 years, the collaborative work between general-population inmates and those in the AS circuit within Ristretti Orizzonti has played a powerful rehabilitative role in transforming the lives of those involved.
