Victimization as transformative experience: A phenomenological perspective

June 23rd, 2025

We draw attention to the article “Victimization as Transformative Experience: A Phenomenological Perspective” by Antony Pemberton and Eva Mulder, published in Theoretical Criminology, Vol. 29, Issue 2.

In this contribution, the authors address the topic of victimization from an original standpoint. Departing from interpretations that reduce victimization to psychological suffering or to the mere consequence of a norm violation, they argue—drawing on critical and narrative perspectives—for the need to engage in a phenomenological analysis. Only such an approach, they suggest, can fully account for the victim’s experience of a collapse in their meaningful world and their dependence on the perspective of the other.
