The continuation of sociality by other means: ethical reflection in prison

October 12th, 2026

The article “The continuation of sociality by other means: ethical reflection in prison”, written by Afonso Bento and published online in September 2026 in Theoretical Criminology, is now available.

Based on fieldwork conducted in a Portuguese prison, the article explores the relationship between imprisonment, social relationships, and ethical reflection. The author shows that, despite the separation imposed by incarceration, the processes through which prisoners reflect on moral questions remain closely connected to their relationships with others and to their social environment. The study therefore suggests understanding sociality not as secondary to individual experience, but as a fundamental component of ethical reflection even within prison.
