March 24th, 2025
The report “Record Suicides and Critical Events in Prison in 2024: Data from the Prisoners’ Ombudsman Report. President Mattarella in the Year-End Message: The High Number of Suicides ‘Indicates Unacceptable Conditions,’” published in Sistema Penale on January 1, 2025, examines the findings of the National Ombudsman for the Rights of Persons Deprived of Liberty, updated as of December 20, 2024. It is, in fact, a study of considerable interest, as it highlights multiple critical issues and weaknesses within the prison environment. Particularly alarming is the data on suicides in prison, which has reached its highest peak since records of this phenomenon began more than thirty years ago. Additionally, the Report identifies an important correlation between the prisons with the highest number of suicides and their state of overcrowding.
