Security bill between repressive clampdown and risks to liberal democracy

October 17th, 2024

The Security Bill (“DDL Sicurezza”), approved by the Chamber of Deputies on 18 September 2024, and currently under discussion in the Italian Senate, reflects the alarming spread of a repressive culture that, primarily through criminal law, is redefining the relationship between individuals and authorities in various aspects of social life.

“Every authoritarian shift is accompanied or preceded by repressive measures presented as necessary to ensure security. The key issue is recognizing when such repression becomes a real warning sign for democracy”.

In a video interview with L’Asterisco, Professor Cornelli explains, in clear and accessible terms, the cultural dynamics underlying public security policies. He explores issues widely debated across various disciplines, including post-democracy, penal populism, and illiberal democracies.
