November 10th, 2025

In their article “Gameful Relating: How Young Offenders Gain Agency in Criminal Rehabilitation and Restorative Justice”, published in The British Journal of Criminology, Clara Rosa Sandbye and Trine Mygind Korsby examine the experiences of young offenders navigating Denmark’s criminal justice and rehabilitation systems. The authors explore how these youths interact with social programs and professional interventions designed to address serious offending.

Introducing the concept of ‘gameful relating’, the article illustrates how young people engage with rehabilitation and restorative justice efforts to reclaim a sense of agency within constrained circumstances. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, the study focuses on the case of 15-year-old Karl, highlighting his participation in victim–offender mediation and broader crime-prevention initiatives.
