Bringing Together the Criminologies of Atrocity and Serious Economic Crimes

October 27th, 2025

Andy Aydın-Aitchison’s article, “Bringing Together the Criminologies of Atrocity and Serious Economic Crimes”, published in the International Criminal Law Review (vol. 25, 2025), reflects on the value of linking criminological research on atrocities with that on serious economic crimes.

After briefly outlining the two fields of study, the author highlights the shared challenges arising from the complexity and interdependence of these phenomena. Aydın-Aitchison illustrates this through the example of a criminal career encompassing both atrocity and significant economic crime, thereby supporting the argument that the two areas can be fruitfully examined together. He also discusses three further research cases that demonstrate the potential benefits of an integrated approach. In conclusion, he argues that studying these two forms of criminality in tandem makes it possible to acknowledge the lived experiences of victims, who often directly encounter how atrocities and serious economic crimes are closely intertwined.
