Responding to Crimes Committed by the Wagner Group: The Challenges of Legal Accountability

On March 2, 2026, the international conference “Responding to Crimes Committed by the Wagner Group: The Challenges of Legal Accountability” will be held in Paris. It is organized by Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and the Institut de Recherche en Droit International et Européen de la Sorbonne.
Starting from the case of the Wagner Group—implicated in various military and security operations around the world and accused of serious violations of human rights and international law—the conference will examine the responsibilities of states that resort to the use of private militias and the possible avenues available to international justice to take action against them. The aim is to explore the legal and political challenges raised by this case, as well as the tools available to ensure justice, reparation, and recognition for victims.
The conference can also be followed remotely, but registration is required.
